Since it’s inception, the Expo has been a celebration of fly fishing. Primarily the purpose of the Expo is to have fun. Free admission and the same 2 day format will again be the “modus operandi”.This year we have the honor of having Charles Jardine as our honored guest and banquet speaker.
Stayner Ducktail
The fly for this years Expo is the Stayner Ducktail. If there ever was an Idaho fly the Stayner Ducktail is it. Originated by Ruel Stayner of Twin Falls, Idaho in the 1920s, the Stayner Ducktail was designed to imitate perch fry that he found in Magic Reservoir. Ruel started the Stayner Sporting Goods store, in Twin Falls, in 1946 which immediately became the headquarters for southern Idaho fly fishers. Ruel was the mentor for many shop owners and fly fishers.
Since it’s inception, the pattern has gained popularity in Idaho with such notable fly fishers as Ken Magee and Marv Taylor. Before Ken passed away, in 2006, he enjoyed telling stories of using the Stayner Ducktail on the Zhupanovo River in Kamchatka, Russia with great success. In fact Ken was the banquet speaker at the Expo a few years back and relayed his entire account of his Kamchatka adventure. Ken was a true believer in the Stayner Ducktail and used it for not only trout but anything else that swam. Marv Taylor is also an avid Ducktail fan. He has a very nice article on it at the Fly Anglers On Line Website. Marv also has used the fly for warmwater fish as well as coldwater fish. Marv has experimented with color variations and has a Blonde Stayner that he likes very well.
An interesting side note is that Ruel initially named the fly Stayner Duckwing but a local newspaper got it wrong and called it the Stayner Ducktail and it stuck.
