These workshops are generally for a maximum of 10-12 people, are very educational and highly intensive.   Most years the workshops fill up prior to the Expo starting so preregistering is highly recommended. Women’s Introduction to Fly Tying

Friday April 16th 8:30 am - 12:00 pm - $35

 

This workshop is for ladies who are interested in “what is it about tying those silly flies?”  You will learn from top female tiers from across the country.  We’ll cover the basic tools and materials needed to get started and in this four-hour workshop you will learn how to tie a few simple patterns that do catch fish.  Come join the fun with other women with similar interests.

Tying George Grant Flies with Todd Collins

George Grant’s hair-hackled patterns and tying techniques were revolutionary and are now an important part of Montana fly-fishing history.  His innovative weaving techniques allow you to weave various hairs into actual hackles to create some truly unique and effective patterns.  Todd worked extensively with George for years to master his techniques and preserve the art.  Todd will supply you with a complete kit with instructions, materials, and some custom tools that make weaving easier.  Join Todd and learn some unique techniques and help keep the art of hair weaving alive and fishy.  Lunch will be provided.

 

 

Tying Articulated Streamers with Kelly Galloup

If you’re looking for some new streamer patterns, this workshop is for you.  Kelly has been working out effective streamer patterns for large trout for many years taking his designs to the next level with articulation.  Kelly will show you how to tie his most effective patterns and will also share with you the best places and overall techniques to fish them.  Kelly has been a fly fishing guide for 27 years. He started guiding in Michigan at the age of 16 and opened his fly shop The Troutsman in Traverse City, Michigan, in 1981.  He moved to Montana 2002 and runs the slide Inn fly shop on the banks of the Madison.  He is an author and lecturer. His books are Modern Streamers for Trophy Trout (co-authored with Bob Linsenman) and Spinners and Cripples. Kelly has been published by virtually every major magazine in the business.  He has also produced several streamer tying and fishing videos demonstrating his techniques and patterns.  Join Kelly and learn some of his hard earned knowledge.

 

 

Czech Nymphs and Soft Hackles European Style

with Charles Jardine

Czech nymphing is a very effective fishing technique requiring some special rigging and best fished with a particular style of fly.  Direct from the UK where the system is much more utilized, Charles will be sharing his expansive  knowledge on the flies and techniques.  Also popular in Europe are soft hackles, somewhat forgotten in the US, Charles will share just how effect the flies can be when tied and fished correctly.  Charles is coming all the way from England to join our show this year.  His life is centered around fishing being a fly tier, casting instructor, angling author and even a artist.  He demonstrates techniques of fly casting and fly tying at numerous angling shows in U.K., Europe and the U.S.A., gives illustrated talks to fishing clubs and associations and fly casting tuition, and has often been featured on TV. and radio programs.  He is the recipient of the coveted American Federation of Flyfishers “Presidents Pin”, the only Briton to win the award, given for conservation and services to the world of fly-fishing.  Join Charles as he shares some of the UK’s most effective flies and techniques

 

 

Flies for Southwest Montana with Tim Tollett

Every area has it’s “special” patterns that were developed locally and are just the ticket the visiting angler needs.  Tim will be sharing the hot patterns for Southwestern Montana.  Patterns very useful on jewels like the Beaverhead, Big Hole, Ruby, Jefferson, and the Madison.  Tim has owned and operated the areas primer fly shop and guide service, Frontier Anglers in Dillion, Mt for more than 30 years.  A very talented tyer and collector of productive patterns Tim is “The Man” when is comes to his local area fisheries.  Join Tim and see what flies work best for Southwestern Montana, you might find they will work well on your home waters as well.

 

 

Hair Tying Techniques for Trout Flies with Chris Helm

This gem is both a pattern and techniques workshop where Chris will share tying some of his favorite trout fly patterns that incorporate hair in their design.  Chris will be teaching some flies that we all like to use but are typically harder to tie.  He will be sharing some of the tricks he has learned over the years to help you insure you don’t have a bad hair day.  Chris has been tying flies for over 39 years with hair patterns being his specialty.  He has been teaching fly tying for 22 years traveling across the US and to eight European countries.  He also currently has six tying videos sharing his tying expertise.  In 2004 he was the recipient of the prestigious FFF Buszek Memorial award for international fly tying excellence.  Join Chris and learn how easy tying with hair can be while you tie some effective trout patterns.

 

 

Thread Control and Materials Handling with Wayne Luallen

This is a techniques workshop concentrating on understanding “how” and “why” rather than the tying of specific patterns.   Wayne takes you through understanding why materials respond in different ways, how you can use different thread control techniques to gain greater control over your materials, and how to select materials that may be better suited for your specific application at hand.  This workshop is for people with tying experience looking for improving their techniques, this workshop is NOT for beginners.  Wayne has tied most every type of fly he could get in his vise since 1974.  He has taught and demonstrated at numerous fly tying and fishing events world wide since 1980 and his work has been published in several magazines and books.  Wayne also received the prestigious FFF Buszek Memorial award in 1991 for international fly tying excellence.  So if you are interested in learning some valuable generic skills that will elevate your fly tying to a new level this workshop is for you.

 

 

Flies for the South Fork of the Snake with Todd Lanning

Our local river and home to the wonderful Cutthroat, the river has a unique hatch progression with many subtle hatches missed by many anglers.  Back by popular demand after selling out early last year, Todd will be sharing some of his secrets on successful patterns for the South Fork and how to tie them.  Todd is the general manager of South Fork Outfitters.  He grew up on the river and has been collecting effective patterns for the river for decades.  His guiding career began in Ketchum and progress to the mighty South Fork.  A very talented fly tyer and tying instructor Todd will be sure to expand your fly box with successful patterns for the South Fork and beyond.

 

 

Tying Small Flies (Advanced) with Wayne Luallen

Does the thought of tying small flies make your hands tremble and eyes hurt, this workshop is for you.  Wayne will be sharing the secrets to scale and proportion that make tying small flies 18 and smaller a snap.  You will find out tying smaller flies is actually easier than larger ones because you can get away with simpler creations.  The workshop will cover everything from nymphs to drys in nothing larger than an 18 including those pesky midges the trout love but most tiers dread.  Wayne has tied most every type of fly he could get in his vise since 1974.  He has taught and demonstrated at numerous fly tying and fishing events world wide since 1980 and his work has been published in several magazines and books.  Wayne also received the prestigious FFF Buszek Memorial award in 1991 for international fly tying excellence.  So if you are interested in learning how to scale things down and create some tiny fishy flies, this workshop is for you.

 

 

Stillwater Flies and Techniques with Denny Rickards

Stillwaters can be difficult to understand and fish successfully.  They require a different set of fly patterns to fish effectively and a different set of techniques.  Denny has spent a lifetime figuring out their intricacies and nuances, a task that has taken him and his fly rod to waters all over the western United States.  Denny is THE  lake fishing expert with several books and videos to his credit.  He is a full time guide on Upper Klamath Lake and conducts fly fishing schools and clinics.  Denny is unique in his drive to help others understand and be successful at lake fishing.  Come and learn how to expand your stillwater fly box and skills from the one of the most knowledgeable people in the industry.

 

 

Leslie’s Favorite Spring Creek Patterns with Leslie Harrop

If you are into fishing spring creeks, this workshop is for you.  Leslie will be tying some wonderful CDC mayfly patterns developed mainly for the Henry’s Fork area in Island Park, although effective for any spring creek type fishing.  Born into a fly fishing family in 1967, Leslie grew up on the banks of the Henry' Fork.  As a member of House of Harrop, she has been tying professionally for 28 years, specializing in technical CDC patterns for fishing spring creeks and tailwaters.  Leslie has demonstrated her skills at numerous shows and conventions throughout the western United States.  So join Leslie and learn to work with CDC and tie some truly effective mayfly spring creek patterns.

 

 

Tying Foam Flies with Stefanie Jones

Saturday April 17th 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm - $35

 

Foam is wonderful stuff, it floats well, takes a fair amount of abuse, and is fairly easy to tie with.  It does have a learning curve to working with it though.  This workshop will cover many techniques for working with foam to create some really effective flies.  The emphasis will be on how to work successfully with foam but you will tie quite a few good patterns learning the techniques.  The different types of foam and their properties will be covered to help you select the best foam for your application.  Stefanie has worked and played in the industry for years.  She has tied commercially for Rainy’s Flies even overseeing the Thailand factory at one point in her career.  Join Stefaine and learn the tricks to working with this versatile tying material.

 

 

Tying Cripples and Emergers with Scott Sanchez

Saturday April 17th 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm - $35

 

A lot of accidents happen on a bug’s commute to a new life above the water.  If you aren’t fishing emergers and cripples you are missing out on something the fish certainly aren’t.  In this workshop Scott will be sharing some of his favorite and truly effective emerger and cripple patterns that allow you to fish in and just below the surface film where the fish look first for an easy meal.  Scott is regarded as one of the country’s most innovative fly ties, with his tying sessions providing entertainment for all.  Scott has been teaching fly tying since the early age of 14 and has been working in the industry for the last twenty years tying flies commercially, guiding, helping with video productions, writing articles, and serving as the fly tying editor for Fly Fisherman magazine.  Scott is currently working for the Jack Dennis fly shop in Jackson Wyoming, which features many of his effective flies.  His Double Bunny has won the prestigious One Fly Contest three times.  Join Scott as he shares his innovative techniques developing patterns that will expand you fly box to a whole new level.

 

 

Casting Workshops

 

Beginning Fly Casting with Bob Jacklin

Friday April 16th 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm - $35

 

This workshop is for the beginner caster or as a review for the intermediate caster.  The goal of the class is to provide students will a good foundation of the casting mechanics. Students will learn the 3 basic casts: the pick-up lay down cast, the false cast, and the roll cast.  Several specialty casts will also be covered as time allows.   Bob moved to the Montana area in the mid-60’s and by 1970 was a full time guide and fly fishing instructor in West Yellowstone.  In 1974 Bob began his own outfitting and fishing business and this year celebrates his thirty-sixth consecutive year as a fly fishing guide and outfitter.  Truly a comprehensive fisherman, Bob has toured and lectured extensively on all aspects of our sport.  Bob is a certified fly casting instructor with the American Casting Association and a master certified fly casting instructor with the Federation of Fly Fishers, and a member of the FFF fly casting board of governors.  Bob is also a member of the St. Croix rod company advisory team and the Ross Reel pro staff.  Additionally he was the principal instructor for nearly ten years with the landmark Fenwick Fly Fishing Schools.  Join Bob and learn from the one of the best.

 

 

Dealing with Wind, Heavy Flies and Accuracy

with Jack Dennis

Progress to the next level of casting expertise with this workshop.  You will learn how to tackle one of the most common problems in our area, the WIND.  Jack will share some specialized techniques to making casting in the wind easier.  He will also be coving some techniques that make casting larger flies easier putting them where you want them instead of the old chuck and duck method.  Finally Jack will be concentrating on the casting points that provide the most consistent accuracy.  Jack began his professional fishing career at 12 when he sold his first flies and at age 14 he started guiding visiting anglers.  Over the years he has become one of the premier fly fishermen in the world, publishing several definitive fly tying books and many videos.  He as been featured on many fly fishing television shows around the world and has guided people from US Presidents to movie stars.  Jack was a member of the U.S. Fly Fishing Team in 1988 and 1991 and this year he is playing the role of coach.  Come and learn how to cast better when the going gets tough.

 

 

Beginning Fly Casting with Mike Atwell

The workshop will introduce casting fundamentals covering the pick-up lay down cast, the false cast, and the roll cast.  Mike has been teaching fly casting for over 20 years teaching at Fenwick schools , for Club Pacific as well as the prestigious Andy Puyans fly fishing school.  Mike has been representing Sage for 18 years now, has been involved in numerous games, competitions, and television programs.  He has worked with many of the masters such as Mel Kreiger, Lefty Kreh, Jim and Carol Green , The Rajeffs, and of course the master himself … Andre Puyans.  Join Mike and take your casting to the next level and your fishing will improve greatly.

 

 

Smooth Style for Easy Casts (Intermediate)

Introduction to Spey Casting with Lee Davison

If you would like to expand your fly fishing experience into the world of spey casting this workshop is your entry ticket.  This workshop will provide you with the proper starting point to launch your new casting career.  Lee will help you understand the mechanics behind the unique spey cast and show you how to use it to expand your presentation to new lengths in tough casting positions.  Lee is a Federation of Flyfishers (FFF) Master and Two Hand Casting Instructor, Chairman of the Board of Governors for the FFF Guide Board, a Board Member of the Western Rocky Mountain Council of the FFF, a Board Member of The Snake River Cutthroats (local TU & FFF chapter) and a licensed Idaho Fishing Guide with over 25 years of experience on the North and South Forks of the Snake River.  He owns and operates Snake River Outfitters.

 

 

Fishing Workshop

 

Women’s Fly Fishing Clinic

This workshop will be a day-long workshop for ladies who want to learn the basic skills involved in successful fly fishing or to improve their skills to the intermediate level.  We will cover equipment needed, knots, and learning to cast. Rods and reels will be provided if needed.  You will be outside casting, so dress accordingly.  Lunch will be included.

 

 

Classic Nymph Fishing with Tim Tollett

Friday April 16th 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm - $35

 

“Classic Nymph Fishing” that would be nymph fishing without indicators.  Almost a lost art these days.  People have taken to bobber fishing because it is easier to learn providing quicker results.  What we have lost in the drive for catching fish quicker is the broad ranger of asd that classic nymphing provides.  Tim will be bringing back the good old days showing you the highly effective methods of fishing without a strike indicator and demonstrating you don’t have to be Yoda to detect takes as is commonly though.  Tim has owned and operated Frontier Anglers in Dillion, Mt, the area’s primer fly shop and guide service, for more than 30 years.  He learned it the old fashion way from the best and have been utilizing it ever since.  Join Tim and he shows us what we have all been missing in our nymph fishing.

 

 

Introduction to Fly Fishing with Tim Woodard

Saturday April 17th 8:00 am - 12:00 pm - $35

 

This workshop is a 4-hour crash course introduction to the sport of fly fishing.  Tim will cover how to select your first fly fishing outfit, teach you how to cast, show you some basic fly fishing knots, provide some info on the insects (entomology) that trout love to eat, and show you some flies to imitate them.  In addition to these basics to get you started, Tim will also suggest some local areas around Idaho Falls to try out your new skills.  John has been the Assistant Manager of Jimmy’s All Season Angler in Idaho Falls for 10 years.  He has been a trout and steelhead guide in Idaho and Montana, teaches classes in fly tying and fly casting as well as fly fishing.  During the summers Tim spends his days on the river guiding for the South Fork Lodge.  His winters are spent working at Jimmy’s All Seasons Angler sharing his knowledge with shop patrons.  Tim also teaches Fly Fishing and Fly Tying locally for Idaho State
